It’s been raining now for days on end. While the sun does peek through on occasion, the ground is too wet to dig in. I know this because in the past I’ve given in to the urge to work in the garden beds too soon after a heavy or extended rain. While it is possible to plant in muddy ground, the result of doing so in soil that is mostly clay isn’t pretty. Once the clay soil dries, it can be hard as a rock if the wet soil is dug in and planted. And that’s not taking into account the chance of whatever I plant rotting in the ground if the rain continues. In the end, it’s just better to wait until the ground dries up a bit on its own.
So, I wait impatiently. I watch the weeds, which are taking full advantage of the alternating rain and sunshine mix. And I promise them they will be the first to receive my attention once I can get into the garden beds to work.
In the meantime, I’ve been writing, and planning, and – I have to confess – doing some online shopping. The hori hori knife I ordered has arrived. It’s a handsome thing, all shiny and bright. I can’t wait to put it to use. I ordered two metal raised beds to replace wooden ones that have seen better days. And I bought a new bird bath this afternoon. I already have the perfect spot for it – once the rain stops. Soon, soon, I promise the daylilies waiting to be planted. Soon.
And if not, maybe I’ll just build an ark.
