The moss phlox (Phlox subulata) doesn’t mind the weeds.
I should have spent Tuesday’s sunny afternoon in the garden weeding, but I decided to treat myself first. I went plant shopping, the first time this season. Call it inspiration for the sweaty work ahead. Yes, delay makes the weeds grow taller and stronger, but I needed some hanging baskets and a new edger and, well, I’ve avoided garden centers so far this year and I think it was about time.
I returned home with 16 plants: four hanging baskets with million bells (Calibrachoa), two bougainvillea, two dianthus, two columbine, a blue phlox, and three herbs (lemon thyme, rosemary, peppermint), along with a couple of new garden tools. It was fun and just the first of this year’s plant shopping excursions.

Flowering quince (Chaenomeles)
This morning, I potted up the rosemary, lemon thyme, and peppermint. They’re now sitting on my back porch windowsill. Next, the bougainvillea went into twin pots and will take their place in the sunroom. I’ll be hanging three of the million bells there, too, for the time being. The fourth will go outside on a shepherd’s hook for the hummingbirds and other pollinators to enjoy.
Alas, I ran out of time this afternoon and wasn’t able to do more with my new plants. But there’s always tomorrow. The rain predicted for this afternoon held off, but I had a meeting to attend, so my new plants will have to wait until tomorrow when I’ll venture outside to pull weeds, dig holes, and put some of those plants in the ground. Oh, and take some pictures.
Maybe I’ll even make a dent in all those weeds before our next round of rain and sunshine.

A frequent visitor to the garden.
