Another Day in the Garden

Bleeding Heart, Solomon’s Seal

It’s National Weather Observers Day—Who knew?  Not me.  Truth is, I observe the weather every single day.  It’s the first thing I do in the morning.  I get up, walk to the nearest window and move aside the curtain to see what Mother Nature has in store (for the moment, at least).  Today is Tuesday, May 4th.  It’s near the end of the day and, as usual lately, she’s been a bit indecisive.  We’ve had sun, mild temperatures, clouds, wind, calm, and a touch of rain.  The garden is happy and so am I.

This time of year, I tend to watch the forecasts more than any other season.  In winter, I’m usually concerned about blizzards or ice accumulation.  Summer I take as it comes.  Fall is just a question of when that first killer frost will strike, so I keep a collection of old sheets and blankets to cover plants that are still producing if the temperature falls near freezing.  But spring, spring is the season I watch the weather.  There’s the melting of the last stubborn snow.  The thawing of the ground followed by the drying of the mud so the garden can be tidied and the soil worked.

This week I’m watching the early bloomers in the garden—not just ornamental flowers, but the apple and pear trees, too.  Insects are buzzing through the air.  Birds are flitting from tree to shrub across the yard.  The leaves on the lilacs have unfurled and are growing daily.  Soon the flower buds will swell, and the air will be filled with their fragrance.  It’s spring in all its glory and the weather is getting better every day.
